Sony has confirmed this morning that they will begin rolling out the PlayStation Network service this week.
The service which went down over a week ago, later confirmed to be the result of an illegal intrusion that saw the company admit personal data has been compromised in the process.
Over the next seven days, Sony will begin to restore the following parts of the service:
* Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation3 (PS3) and PSP (PlayStationPortable) systems
* This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
* Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
* Access to account management and password reset
* Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
* PlayStationHome
* Friends List
* Chat Functionality
The PlayStation Store will launch sometime this month.
Sony has also promised a more secure service which include the following new security additions:
* Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
* Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
* Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
* Implementation of additional firewalls
Sony says the company is conduction a thorough and on-going investigation and working with law enforcement to track down those responsible for the intrusion.
To compensate for the downtime, Sony will be offering a "Welcome Back" program to all of its PlayStation Network users which will include free 30 day memberships to PlayStation Plus and Qriocity (current subscribers will be given 30 days free on top of their subscription).
Selected ‘PlayStation entertainment content’ will be free to download as part of the program but Sony has not announced what this will include.
This program will be rolled out once Sony has returned PSN and Qriocity to the standard "users have grown to enjoy".
