Sony has revealed during their annual press conference at the Tokyo Game Show that the PlayStation 3 has sold 51.8 million units worldwide since it launched in 2006.
According to Eurogamer, this figure is still slightly behind the Xbox 360′s which has sold 55 million.
The difference between the two different tallies is commonly associated with Microsoft’s console hitting the market a year earlier in 2005.
Interestingly Sony also confirmed that the PSP had sold a total of 71.4 million units in its lifetime which is extremely impressive. Especially as the regularly marginalised handheld has only been out two years longer than the PlayStation 3.
Obviously all these statistics only tell half the story, but still it’s nice to know where exactly the console sales stand in the grand scheme.
