For the first time in Need For Speed’s history, Need For Speed: The Run will let the player get out of the car, GamerZines can reveal.
GamerZines was shown an early build of Need For Speed: The Run last month, and can now reveal that the game features ‘out-of-car sequences’, which follow the player on-foot during interactive action sequences.
"For the first time in Need For Speed history you’re actually going to be able to get out of the car," The Run’s executive producer Jason Delong told GamerZines.
"For us, that’s a way for us to continue the story without always being behind the wheel. We don’t want the player to feel like they have to sit back and watch a movie – obviously we do have cutscenes, it’s a traditional game – but we also have the ability to get out of the car and have action sequences that push the narrative forward outside of the car as well as behind the wheel."
But don’t expect a GTA-lite: the sequences won’t give the player complete control over their character. Instead, the sequences play-out more like interactive cutscenes, with button prompts and QTEs seguing races.
The demo we were shown shows new character Jack bailing from his car while being chased by mobsters, running up a flight of stairs and across a building top while avoiding gunfire from a pursuing helicopter. Next, Jack jumps off the side of the building and subdues police officers before racing off in a police cruiser.
The out-of-car sequences will also feature multiple paths.
However, DeLong is keen to reaffirm that the out-of-car sequences won’t take precedence over the driving.
"NFS traditionally is a racing game at its core," he continued, "and it will continue to be a racing game. But we have been able to push the envelope with our story and our narrative with this engine in ways that have never been done before."
Need For Speed: The Run launches on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and 3DS on November 18th 2011. You can check out our exclusive preview in the next issue of P3Zine, out June 16th, and the first screenshots below.
