Media Molecule is said to be “stepping away from Little Big Planet to focus on some new ideas”, according to a report coming out of the Gamelab conference currently underway in Barcelona.
The news was revealed via a tweet made by EDGE, allegedly quoting LittleBigPlanet’s executive producer Siobhan Reddy.
Later tweets made by EDGE also quote Reddy as saying “you buy so much creative freedom by not being an expensive studio,” and that the studio is “about to open Move functionality to the Little Big Planet creator community later this year”.
Media Molecule has previously developed both LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2 on PlayStation 3. The upcoming PlayStation Vita version of LittleBigPlanet is being developed by Tarsier Studios.
In recent weeks Media Molecule has been actively hiring for work on a new undisclosed project which many assumed would be LittleBigPlanet 3. If this report is true, that obviously won’t be the case.
A new toolset for LittleBigPlanet 2 to include PlayStation Move support is due for release soon, however the news raises the question of whether Media Molecule will continue to support LittleBigPlanet 2 with on-going DLC or cut support to focus on new projects.
LittleBigPlanet 2 launched on PlayStation 3 back in January.
