InXile Entertainment’s President Matt Findley has told GamerZines that launching a new IP is a "really, really hard thing to do," saying that there are "not that many opportunities" for independent developers to work with a big publisher on an original title.
"It is really hard to launch a new IP," said Findley talking to us about his upcoming action game Hunted: The Demon’s Forge.
"It’s very hard. There aren’t that many of them being launched compared to the way it used to be. The big publishers don’t have that many slots for independent developers to come in with new IP.
"There just aren’t that many opportunities, which is partly why Bethesda was so good for us because they totally got the concept. I think they have the lineup and the strength and the power to make it happen. "
Recent new IPs like Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Vanquish have both struggled to find an audience, despite their warm reception from critics. It was also reported that both Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge failed to sell the numbers expected by publisher EA back in 2008.
None of those games, however, had a multiplayer element attached to them, something inXile’s new IP Hunted offers. We asked Findley whether he thought that might give his game an advantage in the marketplace.
"There’s something about the multiplayer co-op element and the viral nature of the joy of being able to play with someone else that I think gives us an advantage.
"There aren’t a lot of co-op games; co-op’s kind of in its infancy. I think we’re going to see more and more products weaving co-op into the game at a deeper level like we’re trying to do.
"So I think it does give you an advantage but that doesn’t make it a slam dunk. It’s still a really, really hard thing to do."
Hunted: The Demon’s Forge launches in June on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
