After much speculation it has been officially confirmed that Fumito Ueda has left Sony Computer Entertainment.
The hardware/software developer sent a statement to Gamasutra explaining that while Mr Ueda has indeed left the company he will continue to work on forthcoming title, The Last Guardian, on a purely contractual basis and he’s still “committed to completing” the exclusive title.
This move is undoubtedly a massive blow for Sony, as Fumito Ueda is credited as being the main creative force behind ICO and Shadow of the Colossus; both of which are widely considered to be the two of the previous console generation’s best endeavours.
No reason was given for Ueda’s departure, but we suspect the whys and wherefores will become apparent after The Last Guardian is released.
