Driver: San Francisco’s multiplayer will run at half the speed of its single-player, GamerZines can reveal, rendering at just 30 frames per second compared to the single-player campaign’s much-touted 60fps.
GamerZines was given access to a handful of the game’s multiplayer modes on console earlier last week, with Creative Director Martin Edmondson confirming that the frame rate of the multiplayer is indeed half that of the single-player.
Edmondson suggested that the lower frame rate of the multiplayer was due to issues with bandwidth and visual effects.
The news certainly came as a surprise. Edmondson told us earlier in the year that he felt a game running in 60fps had “such a nicer feeling and fluidity to it” to one running at a lower frame rate, revealing that Driver: San Francisco’s frame rate was one of the reasons why the game had been in development for so long.
The project started around four years ago.
Gamers often favour a higher frame rate in multiplayer games due to the increased response time and accuracy it offers.
But having played Driver’s multiplayer modes extensively, the lower frame rate certainly isn’t a deal-breaker. In fact, the multiplayer remains an incredible amount of fun.

GamerZines brought you the news last week that Driver: San Francisco’s multiplayer modes would require a Uplay Passport to access, Ubisoft’s new online pass system that’s set to be introduced with the game.
A one-time-use code will be provided with new copies of Driver: San Francisco to access the game’s multiplayer, with access available to buy separately via Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network should you buy pre-owned.
Driver: San Francisco launches on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on September 2nd.
