Crytek’s Nathan Camarillo has hit out at the pirates downloading Crysis 2, saying that piracy is "just like walking into somebody’s house and taking something" and that it "makes it hard for good game companies to stay in business".
Talking to GamerZines just days before Crysis 2 leaked onto the internet, Camarillo told us that the original Crysis "was very heavily pirated.
"We can tell how many times it was registered online. A lot of people say that Crytek is whining about piracy, but it’s not. We can see how many times people tried to register it and the numbers are just staggering. It got copied a lot.
"But it’s not just about the business of making the game; it makes it hard for all games to succeed when there’s piracy. Between piracy and used game sales, none of that money ever makes it back to the developers or the publishers and that means the profits just have to be that much better the more you spend.
"Generally speaking it just makes it hard for good game companies to stay in business. And people wonder why there are so many studio closures… We want to keep providing great games to everyone and as part of that we need people to buy it."
However, Camarillo insisted that piracy wasn’t the only reason for putting Crysis 2 on consoles. According to Camarillo, making Crysis 2 multiplatform was "about making the engine have more viable licensing options for other developers, and also about getting the Crysis game and franchise into as many gamers’ hands as possible".
A near-final build of the PC version of Crysis 2, of course, leaked onto the internet last weekend. Crytek and EA launched a joint statement saying that they were "deeply disappointed" by the leak.
Crysis 2 launches on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. We’ll have more on the game, including a hands-on preview, in Issue 48 of P3Zine, available to download from February 24th.
