Battlefield 3 Player Count

Published on April 11th, 2011

DICE’s Patrick Bach has explained why the console versions of have a lower player count than the PC version, stating that issues with "CPU, memory and bandwidth" are to blame.

"It’s more CPU, memory and bandwidth actually," answered Bach when we asked him why the console versions of Battlefield 3 were limited to 24 players, compared to the 64 available on PC.

"What would you like to cut based on that? We don’t want to cut any of the lighting, the animation system, the destruction or the vehicles, so we keep all that and then we stay where we were with Battlefield: Bad Company 2 with 24 players.

"Personally I think that worked fine," he continued. "Maybe it would be better with more but that’s not always the case."

Let’s be honest Patrick, it probably would be.

The news of the multiplayer player count being restricted on the console versions of Battlefield 3 was the cause of disappointment for many fans when it was revealed back in February.

However, Bach is still adamant that the consoles aren’t holding the team back.

"No, not really," he replied when we asked him whether the current-gen consoles were restricting the team creatively.

"We’re setting the bar quite high by developing for the PC, but we do know how to scale things. We’re not worried about the experience from playing on a console would be lesser than on a PC. It’ll still be a magnificent Battlefield game that would look stunning and sound stunning, so I’m not worried about that at all."

DIC probably won’t be showing the console versions any time soon, though.

When we asked when we’ll be given the first glimpse of the console versions up and running, Bach told us he "can’t answer that question."

Battlefield 3′s multiplayer mode is yet to be revealed, of course, although recent comments from Battlefield’s Brand Manager Kevin O’Leary suggest an E3 reveal may be on the cards.

Battlefield 3 launches in November on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
