Big Huge Games find shelter with Epic Games.
Many former employees of 38 Studio’s recently closed Big Huge Games will go on to form a new studio under Epic Games the Unreal Engine developer has announced.
The Kingdoms of Amalur team was recently shut down when it was revealed that its parent company 38 Studios had major financial problems.
It appears that the “leadership team” of Big Huge Games approached Epic shortly after the company’s closure saying they had plans to form a new studio with hopes that their first game could be an Epic-owned IP.
In a stroke of luck, Epic was already looking into opening a new studio in Baltimore but was looking for eager and experienced developers to fill it.
“There’s a million things to work out,” said Epic’s president Mike Capps in a blog post.
“How many of the team can we hire? What will it be called? What will they be working on? We don’t know all the answers yet. Please give us some time to figure it out; we hope to have more to share soon.”
“The way we see it,” he added, “there’s been a big storm in Baltimore, and we’re taking in a few of the refugees – as are the awesome folks at Zynga East, Zenimax Online, and other southeastern studios. Epic’s in a situation where we can do this, and it very clearly fits with our company values, so we’re going to give it a whirl.”
Prior to 38 Studios closure, Big Huge Games was in the process of planning a sequel to Kingdoms of Amalur, which has seen an upturn in sales since news of the developer’s financial problems.
