Big things going down at Square Enix.
The long-awaited Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been canned, according to a Kotaku report.
The site claims the game has been axed after six years of the production citing several sources who confirmed the news.
One source claims Square Enix pulled the plug on Versus XIII just weeks ago and that any resources have been shifted onto the next numeric entry in the series, Final Fantasy XV.
It’s assumed that the publisher hopes that interest in the game will fade over time to avoid making a spectacle and protect the company’s share price.
In related news, Square Enix is set to make big announcements regarding the Final Fantasy XIII saga in September.
The publisher will hold a three-day event in Shibuya, Tokyo, to commemorate the franchises’ 25th anniversary and will host a presentation titled “Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Saga: New Developments Presentation” in which the game’s producer, director, and art director will discuss the future of the FFXIII project.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 launches on consoles earlier this year.
Previous rumours suggested that Final Fantasy XIII-3, an unconfirmed sequel, could wrap up the project.
