- 5. FIFA 11
It must be difficult to keep improving on a game like FIFA year-in, year-out, especially when you’ve got something as polished and as excellent as FIFA 10. But improve they have, and FIFA 11 is a defining moment for EA Sports, not only building on their predecessor to deliver the best football game ever created but embarrassing the competition along the way. Forget two-horse races; we fear the end of PES is nigh.
- 4. Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead may have just lost out in the action-adventure department, but there’s no doubt that it’s the year’s finest third-person shooter. Combining years of experience in narrative and open-world adventure with the Wild West genre, Rockstar’s rootin’ tootin’ shooter wowed us all when it finally launched last May. With an action-packed campaign and a compelling online experience, Red Dead should be in everyone’s collection.
- 3. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
Ubisoft Montreal continue to go from strength to strength when it comes to Assassin’s Creed – and Brotherhood is no exception. With one of the most original multiplayer modes we’ve seen all year and a single-player adventure that’ll keep you hooked, Brotherhood’s simply astounding.
- 2. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit
For sheer innovation in the online sector, nothing comes close to Hot Pursuit. Such is the strength of Hot Pursuit’s always-on social network-of-sorts Autolog, we imagine it being copied by rival games for years to come. The actual online multiplayer game is damn addictive too (we’ve lost count of how many times we’ve told ourselves just one more race), and arguably more entertaining than the twitch-fest online shooters. Hot Pursuit gave us the ride of our year, and if you’re a speed freak, you need this in your collection. The greatest Need For Speed game yet, and arguably Criterion’s finest too. A racer-chaser too good to miss.
- 1. God of War III
From the opening boss battle with Poseidon all the way to the closing credits, we were besotted by SCE Santa Monica’s masterpiece. From the brilliant narrative, the fantastic pacing, the genre-leading combat and epic scale boss fights, everything about God of War III was pitch-perfect. An absolute beast-slaying blockbuster and a title that’ll go down in the history books as one of the best games ever made.
