Medal of Honor Airborne review for the PC
The Medal of Honor franchise is still going strong, with the latest instalment, Medal of Honor Airborne, out this September for the PC. As the name suggests, the game starts with you parachuting out of a plane into the familiar landscape of wartime Europe, and you'll fight your way through six campaigns taking in most of Europe. Fans of the earlier Medals of Honor games will find themselves on familiar territory, but does the game have enough new developments to offer to keep it fresh? Medal of Honor Airborne review for the PC
The Medal Of Honor franchise has
now lasted almost as long as
World War II itself, eking
numerous games out of the conflict on
a slew of different platforms. The PC is
still its natural home though, and the
original Allied Assault was widely hailed
as a masterpiece. Follow-up Pacific
Assault is rarely accorded the same
accolade, so the honour falls to ‘difficult
third album' Airborne to get the war
effort back on track.
As the name suggests, it does of
course involve the utter madness of
launching yourself out of an aeroplane
over enemy territory with little more
than an oversized duvet cover strapped
to your back. As well as making for a
dramatic entrance, this also opens up a
plethora of opportunities as regards
gameplay. Instead of starting each
mission where the designers want you
to, you begin at the point where you
manage to land, steering your
parachute towards a prime spot, or not.
Safe zones are marked by green
smoke, and will generally contain a
surfeit of health, ammo, and hopefully
a bunch of your fellow soldiers. From
there you can carefully pick off the
various objectives in a strategic
manner, working your way round the
map as carefully as possible.
