Combat Mission: Shock Force Interview for the PC
After staggering success with the
Combat Mission games set in
WWII, Battlefront.com has taken
it’s popular military sims to the near
future for some fighting in the Middle
East. We caught up with Martin van
Balkom to find out why Shock Force is
as hard hitting as its name suggests.
What’s the scenario for Combat
Mission: Shock Force?
Combat Mission: Shock Force is
assuming a near-future conflict in Syria
in the summer of 2008. Following a
number of detonations of dirty nuclear
bombs in some major western cities,
the trail leads to Syria, where a fanatical group has overtaken the government.
An Alliance of western Armies invades
the country to remove the terrorists.
The game follows a task force of the US
Army – the Task Force Thunder –
comprised of a Stryker Brigade Combat
Team and a Heavy Brigade Combat
Team with support elements through
that campaign.
The main reason for this backdrop is
that we wanted a real-world scenario
(as opposed to a pure fantasy setting in
a country which doesn’t exist) which
gives us the potential to simulate a
conventional military conflict. Syria is
not Iraq, and has a large and efficient
military force. Our game is set to give an idea of how such a conventional
conflict could pan out.
