Bioshock preview – PC
Bioshock carries the weight of
expectations on its shoulders,
more than any other first-person
game this year. STALKER aimed for the
skies, but everyone suspected a
disaster… meaning its final success was
a pleasant surprise. Crysis is a
technological marvel with some clever
ideas, but that’s it. Bioshock… well,
people aren’t just expecting Bioshock
to be the most exciting RPG/shooter
conceivable with a palpable aura of
constant terror about it. They’re
expecting it to be – whisper it – art.
Irrational’s history in developing System
Shock 2 gives them pedigree, but it’s
only by getting hands on with it can
we really judge what their chances are.
Guess what we’ve been up to?
Bioshock starts with you floating in an
ocean laced with flame, the remains of
your plane sinking. The only thing to
do is to swim to a nearby lighthouse,
enter a bathosphere and then descend
to see if you can find someone to help
you. Within minutes, you’re in ‘Rapture’,
a city constructed decades ago by a
genius tired of the parasitism of lesser
men – governments, churches,
communists – who wished to live in a
place where the truly great were able
to create a perfect society.
