Each month, something new would be released to get propeller heads frothing at the mouth. Cars were simulated. Planes were simulated. Even Richard Branson’s beard was simulated (well, his yacht with beard aboard anyway). But then, something happened. Almost overnight, the sims stalled, and the genre passed quietly on. As the last of the old-school simulation games, Silent Hunter IV is one of few survivors. Graphically, the game looks gorgeous. SH4 uses all sorts of fancy environmental techniques, shading and lighting to make the Pacific skies look the most glorious of blue, and the underwater depths as murky as a sailor’s sock drawer. The water too, a key element of any sub game, looks fantastic, whether you’re above or below the surface.
