The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar Review - PC
We’ve pulled out all the stops to be able to bring you the The Lord of the Rings Online review. Our Lord of the Rings Online review lifts the lid on the final build of the PC game and sees what’s the same as World of Warcraft, and what LOTRO does that’s new.

You may have seen other previews, including our own
Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar preview in issue 2, but MMORPG fans need to read the review of the final game, as the time tweaking the gameplay has been well spent by the developers.
Yes, we think that WoW may finally have a competitor, and our full review explains why. For those who’ve lapsed from playing World of Warcraft, The Lord of the Rings Online, Shadows of Angmar may have enough new ideas to tempt you back to MMOs. As well as a few bells and whistles on the game interface (close as it is to the World of Warcraft interface), the real draw lies in the depths of the quests and the inevitable richness of the Middle Earth mythology.
So whether you’re considering The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar as your first dip into MMORPG gaming, or if you’re a Level 80 (we’re being ironic) World of Warcraft Mage, read The Lord of the Rings Online review to see how the game has turned out.
Lord of the Rings Online Shadows of Angmar Review - PC
For the past two years World of
Warcraft has proven to be
something of a phenomenon in
PC gaming. With over eight million
subscribers worldwide, and widespread
critical acclaim it is without doubt the
King of the MMORPG.
So, Turbine, developers of The Lord
of the Rings Online were left with
somewhat of a dilemma. How best to
dethrone a King?
JRR Tolkien’s epic tale of Middle
Earth and a certain ring, is as good a
place to start as any, but when you’re
dealing with the world’s best loved
fantasy world, you’d better get it right.
Fortunately a hell of a lot of work has
gone into creating an authentic Middle
Earth, and boy does it show.
With the license covering only Tolkien’s
books, incorporating the movie
trilogy’s art direction wasn’t an option.
Unfortunately, the movies will have
been many people’s first taste of The
Lord of the Rings, so Turbine have had
to accept that straying too far away
from the theatrical visuals of Jackson’s
vision could potentially alienate
subscribers. So while it’s not a direct lift,
it feels very familiar.
