My bold sprint for a piece of cover right next to the Strogg shield generator we need to hack coincided with the rest of my team hunkering down behind me to avoid a massive orbital laser called down by one of the Strogg team. Through all the noise and pyrotechnics, I suddenly feel very alone. I can hear the light clunking of mechanical legs as Strogg soldiers race in my direction to dig in around the generator. Then I see a Hornet, the insectoid Strogg anti-infantry aircraft, humming around far above me. But its not until I realise that the mammoth, orange orbital laser is scything along the landscape in my direction that I realise quite how screwed I am.And that’s just about the coolest thing we found out about Quake Wars during our playtest – it’s fun to die. Splash Damage has put together a game with so much variety in its combat that every second of play you’re fretting over a new potential hazard. Every player has so many options available to them it’s entertaining to see what finally does you in, and when you do bite the dust your mind explodes into motion as to how you’re going to avoid it next time.
