The name of the game and the screenshots should be enough to tell you that it’s a bogstandard real-time strategy game with a cod-historical slant. Initially, at least, it is little more than a case of genrespecific box ticking. Spurious historical setting relayed via functional graphics? Check. Portentous voiceovers from dismal drama students? Present. Arcane interface? Correct. Chaotic battles with little actual strategy involved? Naturally. How about that RTS classic, the hapless farmer continuing to plant seeds while he’s actually on fire? Oh yes. Not your bag? Think again. While it’s true that there is little here that could reasonably be described as revolutionary, the old school approach is still enough to suck you in and keep you there, the hours drifting by in a blur of frantic clicking and pseudostrategic trial and error gameplay. It’s hard to pinpoint just when or how the game gets you in its vice-like grip, but it’s some combination of well balanced missions, head-shaking moments of frustration, and an enormous sense of well being when you finally crack it at the 20th attempt.
