Race Driver GRID preview PC

Race Driver GRID preview PC

We've put on our special driving gloves this issue for a hands-on preview of Race Driver GRID, due out on the PC this June. It's a many-faceted racer, with over ninety circuits in a wide variety of real-world locations in Europe, Japan and the US - depending on the location, you'll have a different set of cars to choose from, from Euro-supercars to heavy duty US muscle-cars, and the races will change too. So can Race Driver: GRID be all things to all racing fans, whether your tastes run to endless engine-tweaking or barely-legal street racing? Find out all about Race Driver: GRID in this issue of PCGZine.

Race Driver GRID preview for the PC

Racing games can either be rather dry affairs with great appeal to petrolheads who love nothing better than adjusting downforce incrementally, or tweaking suspension by a micro-notch, or they can be misguided nods to the cruise generation, late jumpers on the Fast and Furious pimped bandwagon, corporate takes on the fading modding-scene. With GRID, Codemasters hope to undertake both these sub-genres with a take on race day that will hopefully inject fun straight into the powerful engine.

Ralph Fulton, Chief Game Designer, tells us that, "GRID focuses on everything that happens between the start grid and the chequered flag: the drama, the rivalries, the aggression and the crashes. This is not a game about collecting cars or spending all of your time in the front-end, tuning suspension settings or designing liveries. We want to make racing exciting again". The powerhouse behind this concept is EGO, the enhanced version of the NEON engine used in Colin McRae DiRT last year - enhanced to exaggerate and add thrills to the physics, par ticularly in collisions. Aiming for a Holly wood blockbuster level of crash'tastic spectacle, expect high-impact flips, spins and smashes with awesome damage modelling, plus engine fires, tyre blowouts and debris in the fast lane.
