Mirrors Edge preview PC

Mirror's Edge preview PC

Late 2008 will see the release of a new and really quite strikingly different FPS, Mirror's Edge. What will set Mirror's Edge apart is its approach to movement - your character's movements will be much more grounded in reality and you'll need to master them if you are to succeed. Set in an urban landscape, Mirror's Edge will see your character running, jumping, leaping across rooftops and climbing and descending some terrifying verticals (think Assassin's Creed) - it's all exciting and fast-moving stuff. We've had a hands-on look at Mirror's Edge this month - find out what awaits us in our preview now!

Mirror's Edge preview for the PC

One of the most significant trends in modern action games is towards freedom of movement through all dimensions, the vertical being the least explored traditionally. Assassin's Creed, Damnation (see preview this issue), Prototype and more are all exploring acrobatic movement - climbing, diving, leaping, swinging and free-running with great success. But DICE, developer of the Battlefield series, is hoping that Mirror's Edge will define this new movement, and movement itself, with a game that rethinks every aspect of first-person perspective from the ground up and up and up.

Mirror's Edge is a first-person shooter, (although we'll qualify the shooter part shortly), set in a modern urban environment, which provides ample vertical opportunities for parkour-style wall-running, vaulting and leaping. While controls are kept simple for achieving such moves, the skill will be required in maintaining momentum and stringing acrobatics together fluidly across the urban assault course. Senior producer, Owen O'Brien hopes to "Change the way that players are able to move in first person. No more restrictions, no more being blocked by simple barriers such as walls and fences. We want to enable the player to move like a real person, with the ability to run, jump, vault and slide in a way that has never been seen before in a first person game."
