A free, web-based shooter - and from the Battlefield brand too - is this too good to be true? We take a look this month at the forthcoming Battlefield Heroes, a team death-match shooter that will pit you against other players and set you to work on your stats rankings. Can a free game, even one with this pedigree, really, truly be worth the time - and will it be genuinely free and not overpowered by adverts? Battlefield Heroes preview for the PC

This is a more casual spin-off from the hardcore Battlefield brand and will be a free, web-launched team deathmatch shooter in third-person. It looks very like Team Fortress 2 in its cartoon style and focuses upon character development and customization, with stat rankings and XP progression.

What do we know?
Heroes is an experiment in casual gaming and influenced by what the developers saw of successful free-to-play systems in Korea. DICE hope to make this free shooter a new revenue model in the West too, through micro-transactions and advertising. But don’t worry too much about intrusive ads and hidden costs. There will be no in-game adverts and you’ll only choose to pay for cosmetic upgrades to start with, then later DICE may introduce items that will let infrequent gamers pay to double their XP acquisition rate for set periods of time.
