Gears of War review for the PCGears of War on the Xbox 360 was a force to be reckoned with - one of the biggest games of 2006, it was both critically acclaimed and hugely popular with gamers. And now the massive third-person shooter comes to the PC, so if you haven't experienced it on the 360, this could be your chance to pick up your chainsaw/gun and blast your way the Gears ruined cityscape. But does Gears of War translate to the PC? There are flaws to this conversion of a truly excellent game - read our review to find out if they outweigh Gears of War's many good features. ![]() Gears of War review for the PC However, it's a lesser known fact, that also like Halo before it, Gears was originally conceived for PC, before Microsoft persuaded (read: threw cash at) Epic to secure a Gears exclusive. And also like Halo, a substantial amount of time later, Gears has found its way back to its spiritual home, the PC, with a few tweaks and additions. The only problem is, Gears isn't exactly the game the 360 boys made it out to be. Putting you into the gigantic boots of Marcus Fenix, Gears of War drops you into the midst of a battle between the humans, and the Locust Horde; a bunch of ne'er-do-wells who crawl up from the bowels of hell itself. The first thing you'll notice about Gears is just how different its combat feels from most other shooters – if you try to play this like you'd play an FPS, you'll find yourself breaking your keyboard off the nearest pointed object quicker than you can say "run and gun". Lead Designer Cliffy B describes the gameplay as "stop and pop", and this is actually a fair description. Rather than simply running through levels blasting, Gears of War requires you to stay put, squatting behind bits of rubble, only to pop up every few seconds to spray another clip in the general direction of your foe.
