FEAR Perseus Mandate review for the PC

Fans of the huge hit FEAR will be looking forward to getting their hands on expansion Perseus Mandate, which revisits the psycho-terror shooter in its original timeframe and promises more intense action, terrifying moments and some decent plot development. Expansions to shooters though are often a disappointment after the rush of the original - will this be the case for FEAR Perseus Mandate?

For some reason, expansion packs for hit first-person shooters are habitually underwhelming. Perseus Mandate is the latest add-on to fall foul of this trend. While it may be set during the exact same timeframe as F.E.A.R., its attempts to emulate the same thrilling gameplay end in failure.

What's instantly striking is just how poorly the graphics engine has aged. Surroundings and enemies look bereft of detail and textures bland, especially when compared to Unreal Engine 3. If you've played F.E.A.R. (and to an extent, Extraction Point) you'll pretty much know what to expect; linear levels containing passages of exploration, combat and psychological terror. While the action remains as intense and satisfying as ever, many of the frights are more predictable than an episode of EastEnders, with the exception of a couple of terrifying moments.
