Call of Duty 4 review PC

Call of Duty 4 review for the PC

Call of Duty 4 takes the series away from its World War 2 setting and brings it bang up to date with modern day warzones in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The 21st century update is a huge success for the game - there's a host of new modern weapons and you'll need to use camouflage and stealth and call on airstrike back-ups. With stunning visuals and sound and awe-inspiring cinematic scenes to back up the gameplay, we think Call of Duty 4 is the best shooter of 2007. Can you afford to miss it?

Call of Duty 4 review for the PC
It was a shock when developers Infinity Ward announced that the next Call of Duty game would not be based around WWII. Dominating the genre and giving the Medal of Honor series a kick in the teeth, Call of Duty 2 was the last word in retro war. Call of Duty 4 concentrates on a disturbingly familiar yet fictional war in the present day and takes on both Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon at the same time. Vintage rifles are replaced with laser-guided air strikes, and GPS, night vision goggles and high-tech grenades are added to the kit bag. The big question is, does it work and can Call of Duty 4 compete with Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon?

Rest assured, Call of Duty 4 is the best shooter of 2007 and makes Rainbow Six look like a paintball session in the park. Polished beyond belief, Call of Duty 4 has awe-inspiring cinematic scenes and a musical score from the man who created the theme tune for Metal Gear Solid and, crucially, Hollywood blockbuster Enemy of The State. There's a real sheen which can be witnessed straight away on the atmospheric opening level. Dispensing with the clichéd yet necessary Russian, nuclear and Middle-East plot line, you're dumped on a boat with your team. It's set at night in a storm and there's the sound of helicopters and men screaming. It's what Under Siege would have looked like if it was real.
