The Soldier of Fortune series is back soon with its latest instalment, Payback. Out in November, it promises to be even more grisly than previous chapters, and just as controversial as it plays out mercenary warfare in strangely contemporary-looking warzones. We're looking forward to the same FPS experience, with close combat and modern weaponry, that we've enjoyed in the previous Soldier of Fortune outings - will new developer Activision deliver? Soldier of Fortune Payback preview for the PC
Brutal and gruesome first-person shooter starring a Rambo-style mercenary cutting a swathe through global terrorism hotspots.

What do we know?
For starters we know that it's not being developed by series originator Raven Software of Quake IV and Jedi Knight II fame, which will be an initial disappointment to some. However, Payback still promises the trademark dismemberment of enemies by high-power modern weapons and closecombat knife work that rocketed the original game to controversial popularity in 2000. The modern mercenary warfare theme, working for shady US freelance company ‘The Shop' is likely to stir up equal controversy this year, especially with the prevalence of and complaints against US mercenary outfits in war zones like Iraq.
