World in Conflict review for the PC

World in Conflict sets itself in an alternate 1989 - the Cold War has run an entirely different course and Russian troops have ploughed across Europe and all the way to the USA. This is where you pick up the story in this real time strategy game. We've reviewed World in Conflict in detail in this issue, and we're so impressed, we've awarded it our PCGZine Gold Award. Find out what makes World in Conflict one of this year's PC must haves in our major review!

World in Conflict review for the PC
There's a bit in Christopher Guest's latest film, For Your Consideration, where Harry Shearer is congratulated for almost getting an Oscar nomination. In a tenuously related coincidence, World In Conflict has been nominated for a BAFTA, up for consideration in the Strategy & Simulation category alongside such leviathans of the genre as the Medieval II: Total War expansion pack and, er, Wii Sports.

On the subject of film, there are parallels with a classic movie, namely 1984's Red Dawn, which saw a pre- Dirty Dancing Patrick Swayze and Jennifer ‘Baby' Grey attempting to put the Russian Army in the corner following a US invasion by Soviet troops. In the world of World In Conflict, it's 1989 and the Cold War has warmed up to boiling point, with the Russkies ploughing through France, Europe and the US of A, which is where you're thrown into the action, assuming that your PC is up to the challenge. It's not often that your jaw actually drops when reviewing a game, but this is proper drool-on-the keyboard stuff. Even when setting the benchmark to adjust for your set-up, the graphical clarity and detail is mind-boggling, an ultra-detailed world of building, tanks, planes, and of course massive explosions.
