Football Manager 2008 preview for the PC
When you're at the top of your game they say you have to be one step ahead of your opposition. It's a saying Sports Interactive – the obsessives behind first Champ Man and then Football Manager – have roundly ignored. For them, it's only good enough to be ten steps ahead of the chasing pack, with hundreds of feature tweaks and gameplay additions announced with each new boss simulation. Since it's very much a chip off the old block, Football Manager 2008 continues this tradition, revamping the game's look, accessibility and gameplay with a host of managerial changes. From the kick-off FM2008 is obviously designed to appeal to a wider audience, to capture new supporters to add to the legions of football fanatics, students and disciples that help make this the most popular management game on the planet.

The more icon-driven look and friendlier, younger-looking menu screens will rile up the hardcore of extremist who believe every step away from a spreadsheet dilutes the purity of the FM experience. An ‘advisor' button that enables you to better understand the myriad options at your disposal, whether it's shuffling your finances or building up a relationship with your star striker, will also annoy retro players.
