The co-founders retiring from games to “pursue something new”.
Last night BioWare confirmed in an emotional blog post to the community that the world-renowned co-founders of the studio, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, are stepping away from the company to pursue new career interests.
Both of the charismatic creators penned lengthy yet good natured statements, explaining that the decision wasn’t taken lightly and is part of the two doctors looking to new career paths for inspiration.
“I’m humbled by the thought that I helped played a role, however small, in the successful evolution of the videogame industry which I still love so much. I will definitely miss this industry and my teams, but I also look forward to and am incredibly excited by the new challenges in the next chapter of my career. I’ll strive to keep you up to date on my ideas and progress – and also just-for-fun/interesting stuff too! – on Twitter @RayMuzyka, if you want to follow me there,” wrote the long time gamer and passionate Star Wars fan, Mr Muzyka.
“I’d also like to thank EA for the amazing support we’ve received in recent years. Working with John Riccitiello, Frank Gibeau, Peter Moore and the rest of the EA team was a great experience and their support was essential in us being able to achieve our creative goals with Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Star Wars: The Old Republic,” acknowledged, Greg Zeschuk.
“Thanks to the team at Electronic Arts we had an amazing run. I’ve had the great fortune of making a number of lifelong friends within EA that I’ll always cherish; happily I leave this experience with great people to remember it by.”
Those are just a few short blurbs gleamed from the goodbye post, which if you have an affinity for BioWare games we strongly urge you check out. We’ll always remember having lunch with the ‘Two Doctors’ early in Star Wars: The Old Republic’s development, and we’d like to wish them luck in whatever endeavours they tackle next.
What’s perhaps most interesting about their departure is that the head of BioWare Edmonton’s GM Aaryn Flynn was keen to point out that even though Ray and Greg are on the way out, they’ve left the company in a really good shape to “embark on a whole new era of games.”
“I know this might be concerning for some of you but the leaders at BioWare have had some time to think about it – to think about how the games, the fans, and the creative teams would move on without the two guys who started this organization back in 1995. We – including Ray and Greg – think the studio is solid and the team here is ready to embark on a whole new era of games,” Mr Flynn wrote.
What are those new games you ask? Well the post directly references Dragon Age III: Inquisition, another new chapter set in the Mass Effect universe, and a new franchise set “in a fictional universe” from the executive producer of the Mass Effect series, Casey Hudson. Those announcements are certainly nothing to sniff at.
Onwards and upwards BioWare, onwards and upwards…
