The ARMA II survival horror mod surpasses an impressive player milestone.
If anyone thought that the free to download survival horror mod DayZ was a flash in the pan phenomenon had their misgivings obliterated today, as the free to download experience surpassed the impressive 1,000,000 unique players milestone.
DayZ is most easily summed up as a survival horror mod, with players dropped into ARMA II’s massive island of Chernarus populated by hundreds of zombies and dozens of other players. Armed initially with only limited medical supplies, you must carefully move around the game-world, looking for weapons, staying away from zombies and being wary of other potentially hostile players. It’s a very tense experience which isn’t too eventful early on, but the pressures of permadeath gives exploration an edge which other survival horrors struggle to emulate and the presence of other players makes DayZ feel really organic and unpredictable.
The mod is still in Alpha and requires players to own ARMA II and its expansion Operation Arrowhead in order to get involved.
Back in May Bohemia Interactive told Kotaku that the Alpha release of DayZ prompted sales of ARMA II: Combined Operations, a compilation which bundle both the main game and Operation Arrowhead, to jump over 500%, and seeing as the mod has continued to grow in popularity we suspect sales have increased even further.
Dean “Rocket” Hall produced DayZ in his spare time while working for Bohemia Interactive with the help of dozens of community helpers from around the globe. This mod is a fine example of how community development can extend the appeal of any game, and more importantly, its profitability.
Here’s hoping DayZ will inspire more developers to enable their community with the tools they need in order to produce more great content and add longevity to their creations.
