First impressions are that Blur represents the riskier ideas which perhaps Bizarre Creations weren't able to toy with in the past. Recently let loose from the control of Microsoft into the loving arms of Activision, this title hopes to revolutionise the racing genre by going back to its original fun-loving roots.

All barriers for entry are broken down to seduce those who have found other racers too complicated to play through. But hardcore fans are also accommodated for with a realistic damage model and locations which borrow heavily from Spain, Britain and America. All the major manufacturers are represented, and the car line-up contains both classic cars and modern speed machines.

A bulky storyline is also promised, sans the usual poorly written dialogue and detached cut-scenes. Instead, Bizzare explained the story would be more organic and born out of gameplay, and enemies are made on the track instead of by way of an arbitrary video. Not only that but a deep social network has been forged in order to fully cater for any of its community's whims and wants. For example, if players only want to race on certain circuits or with certain vehicles then they can do that. If they want to boast of their recent lap time they can do that also, with a gloating screenshot to hammer home the point.

It's hard to shake the feeling that Blur represents something completely different to what Bizarre have done before. It is still the driving genre which they are known and loved for, but by subtly changing certain areas it seems alien to all of its competitors, and that may be why it is likely to be a big success when it's released this autumn.
