Level set in Mercy Hospital isn’t cannon.
Over the weekend a video emerged on YouTube showcasing forthcoming DLC for Payday: The Heist. That in itself isn’t too exciting, but the footage appeared to show Left 4 Dead’s iconic hospital from the ‘No Mercy’ campaign.
Inevitably the interwebs began to spring conspiracy theories from every silicon pore, juxtaposing the DLC as some kind of origin story for Left 4 Dead’s zombie outbreak.
Thankfully it appears that isn’t the case, as Valve’s Chet Faliszek has explained exactly what the link is between the new level for Payday and L4D.
“This is a 100% Overkill made mission for Payday: Heist simply set in no mercy hospital from the Left 4 Dead series,” stated the developer to Kotaku.
“It is not telling the origins of the Infection and is not canon. There is a little cameo from one of the L4D characters (the comic should give you a hint) and a fun little easter egg with a payoff later in Left 4 Dead. Just us having some fun with a studio we are friends with and who have also made a great co-op game.”
So there you have it, the much hyped level in question is set in Mercy Hospital, but isn’t actually cannon. Instead it’s merely one developer allowing another to play around with their IP.
Our wait for any word on Left 4 Dead 3 continues…
