Undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges with The Lord of the Rings license is recreating spectacular battles like Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith. It's something Turbine's MMO will feature heavily in the future but lots of players are wondering how they will pull it off and the answer may be skirmish mode.

If you go into the woods today..."The system that we've created is the perfect vehicle. The whole point of skirmishes is to put you in the 'War of the Ring'," Explained Jeffrey Steele who went on to say that the new mode, which debuts in Mirkwood, has only been used to create smaller battles so far.

Which is why we are using skirmish now, and we want to get lots of experience with it before we get into things that are more complicated."

The joys of Gathburz. With Siege of Mirkwood coming out in December some of the big set piece battles are on the way. Some gamers are speculating it could be as early as next year, with Turbine's next downloadable expansion which has yet to be announced.
In the rest of our interview Mr Steele went on to say that battles wouldn't contain thousands of players, yet they would retain their epic nature in size and scope. His comments suggest that the major battles in the future would be instanced and as a result could potentially be replayable. Obviously this is a far amount of speculation on our part but we can't see any other way Turbine would be able to pull it off.
Whatever the case may be, we are sure that Turbine have big plans for the future and we can't wait to see how they'll recreate some of the most amazing battles to ever grace the fantasy genre.
