GamerZines has learned that Sid Meier is currently working on a new X-COM strategy title.
There had been a rumour that Meier was working on an X-COM title years ago, but it didn't appear to amount to anything. We've since been assured that it is under development.
The source, who didn't wish to be named, revealed to GamerZines that the Civ developer's title could launch in tandem with a new X-COM shooter, which is currently rumoured to be in the works at 2K Boston.
Sid Meier's previous games include a variety of management titles, including SimGolf and Railroad Tycoon, though is perhaps better known for his work on the Civilization series and Magic: The Gathering. Meier's last game was Civilization IV: Colonization, a remake of the original 1994 title, but there is another Meier link to X-COM.
Microprose, which was founded by Meier in 1982, launched the original X-COM games, though Meier later left the company in 1996 to co-found Firaxis Games with colleagues Jeff Briggs and Brian Reynolds.
The rights to the X-COM franchise then got passed around, with the latest game, X-COM Enforcer, released by Infogrames in 2001. But in 2007 2K Games announced that they had acquired the rights to the X-COM franchise, re-releasing 1995 classic X-Com: Terror from the Deep on Steam.
Coincidentally, all of Sid Meier's titles from the last five years have been published by 2K Games.
Sid Meier's X-COM title is supposedly a separate entity to the game rumoured to be in development at 2K Boston, and will focus on strategy.
Through job listings posted on their website last night, BioShock developers 2K Boston revealed that it is currently working on an 'upcoming shooter', which has long been rumoured to be an X-COM title. The studio is currently looking for staff to fill three positions, Principal Combat Designer, Multiplayer Level Designer and Level Designer.
We spoke to 2K for confirmation and were met with a wry "No comment" and some digging for who our source was, which in true journalistic tradition we refused to divulge.
