Sega's Mike Hayes has told G4 that a future release date for Gearbox's shooter, Aliens: Colonial Marines is still unsure within the publisher and that it will greatly depend on the success of that other Aliens based shooter also published by Sega, Aliens vs Predator.

What I would say is it's unlikely that we'd launch anything within six months after Aliens vs. Predator, but probably nine months, eight to 12 months possibly. Though we literally are looking at that at the moment and a lot of is going to depend, as well, on how successful AvP is at the box retail." Explained the head of Sega Europe.
According to Mr Hayes fans may have to wait until 2011 before Colonial Marines hits the shelves which would mean the title will have been in development for three years. The Aliens license is one of the most respected film licenses in all of gaming. There's been plenty of titles such as Aliens 3 and the Aliens vs Predator franchise which has honoured the license with great gameplay and atmosphere which was faithful to the film experience.
This latest quote adds to the troubled development of acquisition and publication of Alien based properties when the company gained licensing rights at the end of 2007. Originally the publisher had three titles in development, an Aliens RPG by Obsidian which was canned and two shooters by Rebellion and Gearbox which are both on their way. The most stable development cycle appears to be Alien vs Predator which is still expected to be ready for release early next year, leaving Colonial Marines out in the cold.
