An isometric camera is "integral" to the "look and feel" of Diablo, Diablo III's art director Chris Lichtner has stated, revealing that the developer had experimented with different cameras early on in development, but that none of them ever "felt" right.
Explaining why the series was sticking with an isometric viewpoint for the next in the series, Lichtner said:
"We love the isometric camera angle. As an art team, it lets us do things that we couldn't do otherwise. We can really cater to it, it's fixed to us and we know what to expect from it and we get to do things that we wouldn't be able to do otherwise. A lot of the look and feel of Diablo from what has been released so far is really based on the fact we have an isometric camera.

It's very integral to the look of the game. We're shooting for something that has a painted look to it, something that people will be able to play many, many years from now."
Ever since Diablo III was first announced in June 2008, that "painted look" has stirred controversy, with over 61,000 Diablo fans signing an online petition requesting that the series goes back to its darker roots, and suggesting that the "cartoon'ish art direction" has "obviously been influenced by the Warcraft universe".
However, in July of last year, designer Jay Wilson said that his team were "very happy with how the art style is. The art team's happy. The company's happy. We really like this art style, and we're not changing it."
So there. No moody stuff for you, Mr. Consumer.
If all goes well, Diablo III will ship on PC and Mac in 2010.
