In a move that is sure to cause upset among the many players that still play Championship Manager Online five years after it launched, the servers for the football MMO are due to be terminated on April 20, 2010.

Though publisher Eidos has yet to comment, Championship Manager Online co-developer Jadestone has told CVG that the final decision to close the servers was made by Eidos.

"The game, the brand, the internet domain and the subscriptions are all owned by Eidos and the decision to cease the service is entirely theirs to make. The decision was made unilaterally by them, and we are not at liberty to comment on any reasoning, " it told the website.

"Finally, we only have one more thing to say:

Thank you, and we're sorry."

On the official forums, one poster sums up the feeling of some of the game's most loyal fans.

"I've never been so devastated by a piece of news in my life. I have invested years of my life building a team that will one day be great," posts Jimmye83.

"I have made some great friends and met a lot of great characters through CM Online, and to have that taken away for whatever reason is devastating.

I think I speak for much of the CM Online community when I say that I would be more than disappointed by this decision, and hope someone somewhere finds a way to keep the game going."

Gamerzines has contacted Eidos for comment.
