As publisher bravery goes, this is without doubt the riskiest promotion of any game we've seen for a long time. Eido's are offering their flagship football management sim, Championship Manager, for as little at £2.51. Gamers can pay whatever they like for the next edition of the game, starting at 1p with a mandatory £2.50 download fee.
According to the products General Manager, this is the most ambitious and expensive Championship Manager to date and this move will attract the attention of even casual fans. This marketing ploy has been seen before in the music industry with Radiohead's 2008 album 'In Rainbows' but we're probably a bit few years away from games being given away in your Sunday paper.
Championship Manager 2010 looks to be the most ambitious title in the series for years. With a longer development cycle and bigger budget than before, many gamers will be tempted with this pre-order offer which expires when the game is released on September 11th.
During the pre-order process gamers can also opt into the CM Season Live feature which updates your game for an additional £5. This gets you five seasonal updates which include all the latest scores, standings, transfers, bookings and major injuries from the English and nine other European leagues.
You can find out more on when you click on the link to the right. The rivalry between Eidos' Championship Manager and Sega's Football Manager is set to reignite this year. A low pre-order price coupled with an earlier release date means that Eidos definitely have an advantage this, but whether that means more profit remains to be seen.
A demo for Championship Manager is out now and it's shaping up to be a solid improvement on previous editions in the series.
