Empire: Total War is undoubtedly one of the best strategy titles ever created, so it's fair to say that a lot of people are looking forward to Creative Assembly's next installment, Napoleon: Total War.

Beards don't get any better...We sat down with the studio's Mark O'Connell to discuss what new features we can expect and he revealed precisely how the new and improved A.I director will operate:

They won't necessarily do them, but it's superior to Empire, as in that game the enemy had a to-do list. For example if you were France and your goal was to invade London, if you failed it would automatically go onto the next objective on the check-list which would be something like form new trade routes or improve relations with another faction and then move further down the list. It meant that for some players the A.I may have felt inconsistent and slightly erratic."

For the love of all that is holy, abandon your position!"We've changed that for Napoleon, so what we have now is that every time an A.I general has an objective, we'll use invading London again as an example, if it doesn't do that successfully militarily it will figure out other ways to meet the objective. For instance cutting off supply lines to England, or allying itself with one of England's enemies and selling them new technology. As a result it feels a lot more consistent with its approach and will paint a much more compelling picture of what your enemies are trying to achieve."

The engine's visuals have been dialled up a notch.Sounds absolutely diabolical and we can't wait to see how our newly empowered A.I adversaries will operate in the final game when it's released in February. If you've yet to taste the Total War goodness then Steam are currently offering the amazing Medieval: Total War for £2.49, which is the very definition of a bargain so go pick it up.
