In an exclusive interview with GamerZines the producer of Need for Speed: The Run has revealed that the next entry in EA’s prolific racing series straddles the line between arcade and simulation.
“Black Box has always done this story/action kind of Need for Speed. It’s done really well with that in the past and it was definitely the right time for us to come back and do that after being away for two and a half years. In terms of how it feels, it’s definitely between the arcade and simulation [sub-genres]; it’s very hard to put your finger on it,” explained Alex Grimbley.
“We didn’t want to create a win button by you just pressing the accelerator because it would be cool for the first race, but by the second race you’d be bored. I like the fact that there’s some depth in there and it challenges you a bit. Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with restarting, as long as you know why and as long as you feel that you screwed up rather than the game has screwed you.”
EA Black Box has been one of the major contributors to the Need for Speed franchise and like the Canadian studios’ previous work, which includes Most Wanted, Carbon and ProStreet among others, The Run follows a linear storyline which sees players racing across America starting in San Francisco and ending in New York.
We recently sampled the first two hours of the latest Need for Speed at a preview event and we support Grimbley’s assertion that The Run is more challenging than what this series is traditionally given credit for.
