Team Fortress 2 players have raised over $300,000 in just a week to help relief efforts in Japan.
This amazing feat was accomplished by Valve selling three limited edition hats, priced between $7.99 – $99.99, via TF2′s in-game store with all proceeds going towards the Japanese Disaster Relief Fund set up by the American Red Cross.
At this point the average TF2 player’s obsession with elaborate hat designs is well understood, however the sales total thus far is still really impressive.
"Take a BOW, TF2 community because that is an incredible, frankly astounding, amount of money from a dedicated number of gamers, to one heck of a lot of people in some real need right now," read a post on the official Team Fortress 2 blog.
"Anytime someone gives you guff about something negative in gaming, you go ahead and point them to this post, because here’s some late-breaking damn news: they are wrong and gamers are generous and awesome."
There’s still plenty of time for the impressive total to creep up as the ‘Humanitarian’s Hachimaki’, ‘Benefactor’s Kanmuri ‘and ‘Magnanimous Monarch’ headware will be available until April 6th in the Mann Co. store.

Final Update: The final total for this charity effort was $430,543.65, all of which will be given to the Japanese Disaster Relief Fund, dispensed by the American Red Cross. What an achievement by the TF2 community!
