Over three years after Team Fortress 2 was officially launched, Valve has decided to commence an open public beta in order to get even more experimental with the online shooter, without potentially breaking the game.
Seeing as betas are usually reserved for games that have yet to be released this move has surprised a lot of people, but the makers of Half Life and Portal aren’t afraid to break conventions.
The new initiative is available to all existing owners of Team Fortress 2 and the beta client, which is around 4.5gb, can be downloaded via Steam right now.
The initial candidate includes three new mini-gun variants for the Heavy and two important changes to cp_granary and cp_5gorge maps.
According to the game’s official blog linked on the right, players should expect the opportunity to sample new technologies, new weapons, additional maps and "game-wide experiments."
Sounds very interesting to us and it’s always nice when fans can help guide the destiny of their favourite franchise.
If there was ever any doubt, it seems Team Fortress 2 will be around for many years to come.
