In an exclusive interview with GamerZines, Sniper Elite V2′s producer Steve Hart has revealed that the PC version of the WWII title will be “something special” and not just another “cheap port”.
The developer explained that unlike previous PC titles, Rebellion has secured both the time and resources necessary to make the stealth-orientated release worthy of the open platform.
“It has been developed in parallel with the other SKUs, but fortunately for us we’ve been able to take it a side. It’ll be the same game, it’s just that it’ll get the sort of love that perhaps we haven’t had the option or the ability to do with other titles. As Sniper is our own IP we’re able to make certain calls that perhaps we haven’t been able to do with other games,” explained the producer.
It’s also worth mentioning that Rebellion are self-publishing Sniper Elite V2 via Steam, as opposed to the console versions which are being brought to market in conjunction with 505 Games.
“We’ve secured the development time to make sure it isn’t just a cheap port and that it’s something special on PC which is absolutely what we want,” stated Hart.
“For the console versions we’re working with 505 Games and we have a good understanding with them regarding the PC version and the console versions we’re making for them; so there’s an opportunity for cross marketing etc. For us self-publishing just means we’re our own masters. We can take Sniper Elite where we feel where it needs to go and Steam is obviously a place we need to be.
“505 Games are doing a good job with Sniper Elite V2 as it happens, but we’ve been in disastrous situations with publishers previously who really didn’t get it. They didn’t understand the material and they took on an angle that wasn’t correct and, as a developer, you always feel that’s an opportunity lost.
“With PC we don’t have that, we can do things how we want to do them and that’s fantastic,” the producer added.
The dominance of Valve’s Steam platform is facilitating a lot of developers to bring their own wares to market independently, rather than rely on third parties. Such developments can only be beneficial to the games industry and it’ll be very interesting to see how Rebellion’s next title makes the most of their freedom.
Sniper Elite V2 will be released for PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 on May 4th.
