Due to disappointing sales of Red: Faction Armageddon across all platforms, THQ has revealed that they are shelving the franchise.
The news broke during a recent investors call, with the publisher’s president blaming a large portion of the company’s net loss of $38.4 million in the previous quarter on Volition’s most recent release.
“We are disappointed in our first quarter financial performance. Sales of Red Faction: Armageddon and our licensed kids titles were below our expectations,” explained Brian Farrell, THQ president, to investors.
“Given that that title, now in two successive versions, (Red Faction: Guerilla and Armageddon) has just found a niche, we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way”
Even though Armageddon was a deviation from Guerilla’s core formula, the reigned in release still had some really nice ideas, a good story and was met with a positive reception by PCGZine.
Volition are currently working on Saints Row 3 and Guillermo del Toro’s Insane, so the developer based in Champaign, Illinois still has plenty of work on its plate.
