OnLive GameStop Deus Response

Published on September 26th, 2011

’s VP of Games & Media John Spinale has criticised GameStop’s decision to remove vouchers included in last month’s release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution that offered consumers access to a free cloud-based copy of the game, telling GamerZines that GameStop’s practices “didn’t put the customer’s interest first”.

“It’s their choice,” said Spinale talking to GamerZines about last month’s debacle. “It’s between them and Square-Enix as to how they want to package something up and distribute it.

“So it’s entirely their call, but I think the way they went about doing it didn’t necessarily put the customer’s interest first and they left a lot of people unhappy as a result of it, which is never good for the industry.

“For a business decision, it’s their prerogative to do what they want, but we take a pretty customer-centric view of things.”

The North American release of the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution included a coupon that offered players access to a free OnLive version of the game.

However, an internal GameStop memo ordered employees to remove the coupon from the box, prompting outrage from consumers and widespread discussion over the legalities of GameStop’s actions.

The firm later issued a statement saying that it does not “make a habit of promoting competitive services without a formal partnership”, and that “Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge.”

OnLive is a cloud-based gaming platform that lets players buy or rent PC games without the need for top-end hardware. The platform launched in the UK last week.
