Psychonauts 2 could finally see the light of day thanks to Minecraft creator Markus Persson.
“Let’s make Psychonauts 2 happen,” Persson, aka Notch, tweeted to Psychonauts creator Tim Schafer in response to reports published last week that Schafer had run into trouble securing a publishing partner for the project.
“I’m serious”, Persson added.
It was reported last week that Schafer would “love” to create a sequel to Psychonauts, but that he’d “have to convince someone to give (him) a few million dollars.”
“I mean I get a lot of, on Twitter or whatever, daily questions about Psychonauts 2. And I would love to do Psychonauts 2, I’ve actually pitched that to publishers several times and no-one has taken the bait so far,” Schafer said.
“It is hard because fans often don’t know how the business works, with the difference between a developer and a publisher, it’s hard to explain that.”
Schafer had yet to respond to Persson’s comments at the time of publication, but could this be the beginning of a dream team? Watch this space.
The original Psychonauts launched on PS2, Xbox and PC in 2005, but despite earning glowing reviews from critics it was a commercial failure.
A similar thing happened with Schafer’s under-performing rock-action game Brutal Legend in 2009, which led to a shift in focus for development studio Double Fine Productions towards digital distribution.
Over the last two years the company has released a range of digital titles, including Costume Quest, Stacking, Iron Brigade and Happy Action Theater.
