Minecraft’s creator Markus Persson has told gamers to pirate his game if they can’t afford to buy it.
Speaking on Twitter, Persson aka ‘notch’ told one gamer to “just pirate it,” in response to his request for a free account.
“If you still like it when you can afford it in the future, buy it then.
“Also don’t forget to feel bad
”.
Joke or serious suggestion? It’s difficult to tell.
Piracy has been a serious problem for PC game developers and publishers in recent years, with figures collected by torrent website TorrentFreak suggesting that last year’s Crysis 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 were downloaded illegally by almost 4 million users.
Minecraft officially went on sale on PC last November following lengthy public alpha and beta phases. The game is a sandbox building game that lets users build their own constructions that has become a cult hit within the PC community.
The game is also due for release on Xbox Live Arcade this spring.
