In an interview with Gamestar, EA’s Patrick Soderlund has revealed that DICE aren’t preparing any mod tools for the release of Battlefield 3 on PC.
The senior vice president’s comments can be witnessed in a video linked here, but they are summarised below.
“As of now we aren’t making any mod tools,” explained Sderlund.
“If you look at the Frostbite engine and how complex it is, it’s going to be very difficult for people to mod the game because of the nature of the setup of levels, destruction and all those things. It’s quite tricky, so we think it’s going to be too big of a challenge for people to make a mod.”
Really EA? Too difficult…
Doubting the aptitude of any game-playing community isn’t wise. Especially as the mod scene was absolutely massive for previous Battlefield games and we have no doubt talented modders have the capacity to understand the fancy tech behind the Frostbite 2 engine.
We suspect this decision is more likely to do with a lack of spare development time and resources or perhaps the added revenue potential of DLC, which the support of an army of modders producing free content certainly nullifies.
Battlefield 3 will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC during October.
