Steve Ballmer has announced during Microsoft’s annual CES keynote that Kinect will be officially released for PC on 1st February.
The confirmation, care of Microsoft’s enigmatic CEO, however wasn’t the biggest news of the conference.
That particular honour belongs to the recently revealed total sales figures of Kinect, which has sold over eighteen million units since launch last November.
“We’re thrilled at the sales we’ve seen for Kinect – 18 million sold in the past year – and we were honored to receive a Guinness World Record for the fastest selling consumer electronics device ever,” stated Ballmer.
Crucially this edition of Kinect will not be compatible with the Xbox 360, as it boasts firmware which wouldn’t currently function on the console. The PC version includes a ‘Near Mode’ which allows Kinect to work accurately even if the user only is only 50cm away.
Whether this will lead to developers to produce better software for this much-maligned device remains to be seen.
