This morning it has emerged that Diablo III will feature an in-game auction house where players can buy and sell loot online, for real money.
The news was broke by PC Gamer who pointed out that Blizzard won’t be selling any one of a kind items in this auction house, instead everything sold will be collectible in-game and prospective buyers and sellers will need to use real world currency to carry out transactions – with the developer taking a small cut via a flat-rate insertion and completion fee.
Thankfully the admin cost associated with any given auction won’t correspond with the overall selling price, instead this model is to ensure Blizzard don’t lose money via sales on unauthorised auction sites. At least that’s what we’re being told.
More details of this process can be found via PC Gamer’s detailed preview.
Frankly we’re unsure how exactly this move will affect the always troublesome gold farmers and illegal account sales which plague the release of most online games.
What’s clear is that Blizzard are taking a different line with Diablo III and regardless of whether it’s successful or not, at least something new is being done to tackle the problem.
